The spawning of an idea

Where to start...perhaps a bit of background...

My current plan is to take ‘Nessie’ my 2010 Suzuki DR650 around the world.  Starting in South America, working my way into North America, then across to Europe and back across Asia, down through Indonesia and East Timor, and back into Darwin, Australia.  How long it will take...I don't know.

The idea sprouted from a few areas.  Initially I wanted to travel around the world (RTW) like my brother Shane did in 2006-2007.  He worked for 6 months and saved money to buy an around the world ticket and travelled to Asia, USA and Europe.  I wanted to do this too.  However when I visited Nepal in 2008/2009 I hired a motorbike there for 2 days (despite have no experience and stalling it several times in front of the owner!).  Riding a motorbike for 2 days opened so many possibilities and I absolutely loved the freedom it gave me to travel where I want when I wanted.  So when I started planning my RTW trip I decided I would buy a bike in South America and sell it at the top when I was done.  I kept looking at maps and the question “what if I just took it a little further” and “oooh, it’s not far across the Bering Strait” turned my RTW trip by plane into a RTW trip by motorbike.  So on Saturday 29th January 2011, I begin riding to Brisbane.  I fly out of Brisbane to Santiago on the 3rd of February to begin my journey.

The most important thing is...nothing makes what I’m doing unachievable for anyone else.  Just a little bit of saving, a lot of preparation, and a mindset to leave a lot behind and prepare for change and freedom on a wide open road!

In the meantime, I wish you all the best in your own endeavours over the next few years.  Take every opportunity you get and turn into something great!  If you find yourself “stuck in a rut”, try some change and see where it leads.  Best of luck and take it easy.  See you all in the future!
